Just a quick "proof of concept" pic to show what my alternative script's visual style was - looking at it on this screen, it's a bit oversaturated for chalk, but that's easily adjustable.
I like both styles - they're pared down and illustrative and they have a warmth to them that I think will make your animation distinct. That said, it seems that you're more interested in this second idea, and I'd suggest that you go with your gut...
